Do people still care about blog comments?

I’ve been blogging for a year now and my stats are solid. Traffic is growing nicely, and I’m happy with where things are going. I’m using Mediavine, and I’m also getting some sales with Amazon and Etsy affiliates.

The only thing I’m missing is actual blog comments (aside from spam). I’ve only gotten two genuine comments so far. This month, I’m on track to hit about 16,000 views.

Am I missing something? Is there a way to encourage more comments, or do they even matter? Do they help with SEO at all?

I mostly write about DIY/arts and crafts and promote on Pinterest. I’ve gotten comments on Pinterest posts, but not much on the blog itself. Some readers even email me directly instead of commenting on the blog.

Any advice on how to get more comments or whether I should even worry about it would be much appreciated!

I don’t think comments are that big of a deal anymore, except for spam. I turned them off on my blog completely. But, I don’t claim to be an expert, so just my two cents.

Thanks for sharing!

No problem!

They only matter if you have a large community and people expect to see some discussion. Otherwise, it’s not a big deal.

Good point, thanks!

I get a few comments on my blog, but more on Facebook and Instagram.

I have several blogs. My first one still allows comments, but the others don’t. In my experience, comments don’t really add much value. My original blog doesn’t benefit much from them, and managing spam is a hassle.

I use social media to interact with readers. People seem more willing to engage there than through blog comments these days.

Makes sense, thanks for the insight!

Could it be that some legitimate comments are getting caught in your spam filter?

Also, maybe your posts aren’t really inviting people to comment. Long posts don’t always lead to discussions. But I just left a comment and everything looks good on your site.

@Miltan
I manually review comments, so I don’t think any are getting lost in the spam filter. But maybe you’re right—some posts just might not encourage comments. I was hoping my DIY tutorials and free patterns would spark more engagement, like recipe blogs. Thanks for leaving a comment and for the feedback!

I think comments mean more to bloggers than to readers. The type of content you create can influence whether people feel like commenting.

My website is about my books, webcomic and movies. I love getting comments and wish I got more, especially with members on my site, but it’s not something I stress over.

I think having comments is great because it helps you build a community and show a bit of personality through discussions. But that’s just my take.

Honestly, people probably spend more time reading the comments than the actual blog post.
