How does ChatGPT prioritize information compared to Google? Is it like backlinks on Google?

Do other AI search engines work in the same way? Is everyone just copying Google’s algorithms for content ranking, with only Google having Chrome data to make it different?

ChatGPT uses Bing if you’re signed in, or it uses data that was uploaded to it if you’re not. I like it because, even though it’s not always spot on with your requests, it gives you a single answer to work with, and it gets better over time. Google, on the other hand, gives you ads and a bunch of results from people like us who’ve forced stuff onto page 1. A lot of times, this isn’t what you’re looking for, but you still get it, and then you either scroll through pages or start a new search.

ChatGPT’s SearchGPT is a bit less clear and random compared to Google’s search system, but it works similarly to Bing results. Since it was developed alongside Bing, it uses many of the same signals. Google and Bing are similar in that they both use backlinks, but the ways they rank content are very different. If you’re trying to rank higher on SearchGPT, working on your Bing SEO is a good way to do it.

ChatGPT isn’t a search engine. It’s more of a content prediction engine.

It does have web search, called ChatGPT Search.

SearchGPT uses Bing, so it’s not the same as ChatGPT.

I see traffic from ChatGPT according to my Google Analytics. It’s showing up under organic traffic.

ChatGPT doesn’t prioritize content the same way Google does. Google depends a lot on algorithms like PageRank, which use backlinks as a form of authority, along with many other factors like site speed, user behavior, and relevance. ChatGPT doesn’t crawl the web or rank websites—it generates responses based on patterns it learned during training. It pulls from reliable sources, but it doesn’t rely on real-time data or backlinks. Other AI search engines, like Bing Chat or Neeva AI, combine AI with live web crawling and ranking. So, they act more like an enhanced version of Google with AI on top. They likely use backlinks too, but how they rank content is a bit different. Google’s edge is definitely its data from Chrome and Search, which helps it understand what people engage with.

We don’t really know exactly how ChatGPT decides what content to show, unlike with Google, where we have a better idea of their methods. ChatGPT is newer, and its software is more proprietary. As more third-party studies and research come out, we’ll learn more about how ChatGPT and similar AI search engines prioritize content. We might eventually get more transparency, like Google did in the past, but I wouldn’t hold my breath on it. The technology is evolving fast, and there’s a lot of new content being added all the time. The best way to understand what these AI search engines do is to get into programming or reverse-engineering some of the available large language models (LLMs).

From what I understand, ChatGPT is just using Google and Bing to pull search results and content via an API. So, it’s more like an aggregator that looks at your input, grabs results, and summarizes them for you.

Backlinks don’t impact SEO.

You should add /s here for sarcasm.
