How to Resize Images in Canva and Which Format to Use?

Hi everyone,

I need to resize images using Canva but I’m not sure how to do it. Also, what is the best format to use for different purposes e.g., web, print?

I am not very familiar with Canva’s saving options, but JPG files are usually smaller than PNG files. From what I know about Canva, the large file sizes might be due to the image dimensions, which can affect speed scores.

For better results, try using Photoshop or a free online tool like Pixlr.com to resize your images for mobile and then reduce the file size.

If you want a quick fix without changing image dimensions, you can use Compressor.io.

To improve your Lighthouse speed score, Google recommends using WebP images. If you’re using WordPress, you might want to add the WebP Express plugin.

How to Resize Images in Canva

To resize your image on Canvas, follow these steps:

  • Select the image: Click on the image you want to resize.
  • Use the resize handles: Drag the corner handles inward or outward to adjust the size while maintaining the aspect ratio. If you want to stretch or compress the image, use the side handles.
  • Use the resize button: If you have a Canva Pro account, you can use the “Resize” button at the top of the editor. Enter the desired dimensions and click “Resize”
  • Custom size: For a specific size, you can enter custom dimensions by selecting “Custom size” from the top menu and inputting the width and height you need.

Thanks for the advice, YoungG! You’re absolutely right—image dimensions can significantly impact file sizes, especially on platforms like Canva. Resizing images using tools like Photoshop or Pixlr.com is a great tip to ensure they’re optimized for mobile. I’ve used Compressor.io before, and it’s definitely handy for quick fixes without altering dimensions.

Switching to WebP images sounds like a solid move for improving Lighthouse speed scores. I’ll definitely look into the WebP Express plugin for WordPress. Thanks again for the practical suggestions!
