If black hat SEO can hurt rankings, why don’t people use it on competitors?

Yes, people do this. It can work, but it falls apart once the bad links are disavowed.

Disavow tools are being discontinued, though.

Does that mean Google can just handle bad links automatically now?

@Will
Google claims they already ignore most bad links anyway.

The disavow tool isn’t as powerful as people think.

Let’s not assume Google handles everything perfectly…

@Will
People assume disavowing links magically fixes penalties. It doesn’t. In 15 years, I’ve never seen anyone undo a penalty with it. It’s not a ‘fix’ tool.

Black hat SEO can work wonders. If you’re doing it well, you just pay high-ranking sites to link back to you. The problem is when someone does it poorly, and it gets detected.

Done right, it’s more than just a boost—it can completely dominate rankings.

People definitely do this. I used to hate it, but after being a target myself, I see why they do it. Marketing has no rules; it’s a free-for-all.

Yes, it happens.

Google doesn’t seem to care much these days, so you can get away with this kind of stuff now. Big brands with resources can easily go after smaller competitors.

Yeah, people do it.

It’s not as effective these days unless you’re extremely targeted.

That’s nonsense.

It’s been happening for years, and Google still can’t fully figure out who’s doing what.

No way Google knows for sure when someone is attacking another site.
