Starting a subscription blog for sports writing and education. What's the deal with domains, and do I need one?

Hey guys,

I am starting a subscription-based blog on coaching, strategies, and general education about American football, with a focus on a multicultural and gender-neutral perspective. I have set up my blog, connected it to Stripe for payments, and created an email account.

However, I am not sure about domains.

Do I need to buy a separate domain name to monetize my blog? What does that involve?

Additionally, Substack offered me the option to claim a handle on “Bluesky”. I saw an option to purchase a domain with my blog’s name for $15-20 per year, but I can’t find that page now.

Do I need this domain, and what’s the benefit?

Yes, buying a domain enhances professionalism and branding. It’s worth it for credibility. A custom domain also improves SEO and makes it easier for users to find your blog.

A well-chosen domain can be an important asset for your subscription blog. Take your time choosing one that is consistent with your brand and goals.
