Is Google Blogger still a good choice for blogging

Hi

I want to start a blog so my writing doesn’t get rusty. Right now, I work as an LLM analyst and I’m not writing as much compared to my old job as a content writer.

I found WordPress a bit too hard to deal with and I’m struggling to get the hang of it.

I did some research and saw Google Blogger listed as a free blogging platform. I think it looks easier and more user-friendly for those without experience using blogging platforms.

Can you share your thoughts on whether it is worth my time to publish on Google Blogger, or should I just tough it out and learn WordPress

Thanks a lot

WordPress isn’t really that hard to learn. If you grasp the basics, it gets easier.

It took me some time to learn WordPress but it’s fairly simple. Lots of help groups are available

If writing is your main goal, why not try Medium It has a ‘friend link’ feature that can be shared for non-members

I’ve had more of my content stolen and posted on Medium than anywhere else. I didn’t even know Medium was a legit platform until I talked to others here. Many bloggers thought it just scraped and reused content.

I’m still unsure how to report these cases there, so it seems like they allow it

@Callen
Oh wow, I didn’t know that… that’s disappointing

WordPress is straightforward

Blogger is fine for getting started cost-free. But if you want to grow a big site or have specific needs, I’d suggest WordPress or similar platforms. Blogger has limitations in customizing your site. It’s good for simply writing and sharing, but platforms like Medium or Substack are better if you already have an audience. For niche writing where you know a lot, Blogger can work, but be aware of long-term limits

@WordWeaver
The only blogger I know who makes a million dollars a year is on Google’s Blogger. Sure, she earns most from her books and speaking events but she always says that no one ever asks what platform she uses for blogging

@Callen
Can you share a link to your great site

@Callen
So she uses Blogger as a landing page to sell her products rather than just blogging. Who is she, I want to learn from her

No, that’s not what I mean at all. She posts often after building a big library of content. She started strong, writing almost daily at first. She now writes weekly but started with over 300 posts. She is a regular blogger.

I used Blogger for about a month until I realized my blog quickly needed more than it could provide. It was great for getting back into writing though; I just grew out of it faster than I thought

Google Blogger feels outdated to me. I can’t recommend it.

I prefer WordPress; it’s solid but does need some technical learning. Spend some time getting to know it, and it’s great for my websites.

But I wouldn’t recommend WordPress for you.

From what I understand, you need:

  1. A simple platform
  2. Support to grow your blog
  3. Basic practice and maybe a community to help

(I apologize if you’re not a beginner)

I suggest Substack, which is also on this forum at r/Substack. It combines blogging and emailing together.

It has some nice features:

  1. It grows your readership organically with use
  2. There’s a supportive community of writers
  3. Everything is simple to set up with just one screen.

As a heads up: it’s not classic blogging; it’s a mix of writing and marketing.

But it could be better for you given the uncertain state of Google’s visibility right now. A lot of new users are making good income there.

I have more info on income here https://creatorincome.co/ if you want to explore that.

In any case, that’s my top suggestion.

If you want other options, Ghost and Beehiiv have less reach but different vibes. Ghost feels more traditional if that’s your path

Google Blogger works for those new to blogging or the online world.

If you have experience, I suggest WordPress with a custom domain. I can help set up a free theme for you that I learned from YouTube with good speed

I’ve written on Google Blogger since 2009 and have made six figures since 2020. I would never change! For one, I can’t be hacked, and many in my Blogger groups have faced that!

Also, I’ll never have to worry about my host when my site gets a spike in traffic! I’ve seen issues where with WordPress, when you pay for hosting, it comes with a limit. If you go viral, your blog might crash. Some pay to switch tiers, but some simply cannot handle the traffic and must leave during that chaos!

I don’t want to actively blog anymore; I can keep my blog alive for just my yearly domain fee. With WordPress, you keep paying for hosting and widgets. Many blogs go offline because owners can’t afford to maintain them. If it matters enough to share, I want it to stay out there. I can change back to a non-vanity URL to avoid yearly fees.

And as you said, it’s easy to use

WordPress offers the most flexibility as your ideas change or if you want to monetize.

I’ve been using Blogger for over 17 years with no issues at all
