SEO seems to be less important these days, especially for small bloggers. The focus now might be shifting to SMO. What do you think? Is it time to give up on ranking on Google and start focusing on social media instead?
The problem with social media is that many platforms limit your reach once you share a link. Unless you have a large following, your posts don’t get much exposure. Facebook groups can work well, and Pinterest is good for certain niches, but in general, Google still plays a major role in bringing traffic. It’s tough to rely only on social media.
How about focusing on something else instead, like deez nuts?

Ha! Got eem .
I have been blogging for 13 years and 90% of my traffic comes from organic search. Social media only brings in about 10%. Google is still the main source of my traffic. Social media is important but search engines are still dominant.
@Rowen
It depends on the type of blog. For me, 85% of my traffic comes from LinkedIn, where I have a larger following.
Social media is just as dead as Google if you’re not paying for ads.

I think it depends on the platform. Facebook and Instagram seem to be fading, but other platforms still have potential.

I disagree. The internet is vast, and there are still many places to find your audience.
All platforms now have similar competition. The key is in the strategy. The person who manages their strategy the best will win.
I’ve been doing this for about 9 months and it seems to be working. Pick something you enjoy and understand what your readers want.
SEO has been declared dead so many times in the past 25 years, and yet, here we are still relying on it.
I find Flipboard works better for me than Pinterest. A little focus goes a long way.
Don’t run a small blog?
Just write what you want and post it. At this point, all the talk about optimization, competition, and traffic feels exhausting. I just want to share my thoughts with the world, not worry about hitting numbers.
SMO sounds strangely familiar. Isn’t it just another buzzword?
The idea that search engines will stop sending traffic is ridiculous. Social media has been limiting external links for a while now, too. Finding what works for you is key.
I get your point. SEO can be tough for smaller sites, especially with Google’s results being more competitive than ever. SMO is definitely important, but I wouldn’t count SEO out just yet. I spoke to experts at BrightonSEO who had some interesting ideas on how SEO is changing. If anyone’s interested, I have a video with their insights.
